The 1980s were when Surfers Paradise truly earned its name. It was a place of freedom, excess, and possibility, where a melting pot of backpackers, surfers, schoolies, and honeymooners all collided.
Think neon lights, sunburnt shoulders, loud shirts, aviator sunnies and handle bar moustaches. Cavill Ave pulsed with energy, pubs spilling onto the street, muscle cars cruising the strip, and beach tunes blasting from every corner. It was a vibe.
But unlike the sleepy surf towns down the coast, Surfers had attitude - bikinis were brighter, hair was bigger, and the sand was a runway for self-expression.
